An Autonomous System (AS) is a collection of connected IP networks and routers that are operated and managed as a single entity under the control of a single organization. AS are important for the routing of traffic through the internet. Big internet service providers (ISPs) usually operate one or more ASes.

BGP is the protocol that ASes use to exchange routing information with one another. It allows ASes to advertise the routes they can reach and to learn about routes from other ASes.
